WebP: best all-around: smaller than JPEG/PNG with equivalent quality. Use for web images.
AVIF: next-gen compression, 50% smaller than JPEG. Supported in Chrome, Firefox, Safari 16+.
PNG: lossless, preserves transparency. Best for logos and graphics.
JPEG: universally supported, best for photos.
Convert Image Formats in Bulk: JPEG, PNG, WebP and AVIF Without Uploading
Modern web projects require images in multiple formats: WebP for performance, PNG for transparency, JPEG for compatibility, and increasingly AVIF for next-generation compression. Most converters force you to upload each file to a remote server, wait for processing, and download the result. AlteredIdea converts everything directly in the browser: add multiple files at once, pick your output format and quality, then download all results as a ZIP.
The format guide at the bottom of the tool explains exactly when to use each format so you can make an informed choice. WebP at 85% quality is a safe default for most web images. AVIF produces the smallest files but requires a modern browser for both encoding and display. PNG remains the right choice whenever transparency or pixel-perfect quality matters.
How to use: step by step
- 1Select output format
Choose JPEG, PNG, WebP or AVIF as your target format. A format guide at the bottom explains when to use each one. - 2Set quality (if applicable)
JPEG, WebP and AVIF accept a quality slider (10–100%). PNG is always lossless so no quality slider appears. - 3Add your images
Drop one or more images onto the upload zone. Multiple files are accepted: the list grows as you add more. - 4Convert all files
Click 'Convert' to process every file in the list in sequence. A green tick appears next to each file when done. - 5Download individually or as ZIP
Click Download next to any file for a single save, or 'Download All as ZIP' to get everything in one archive.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Does converting change the image quality?
- For lossy formats (JPEG, WebP, AVIF) quality depends on the slider: lower values produce smaller files with more artefacts. PNG is lossless so conversion to PNG preserves full quality. Converting from a lossy to a lossless format does not recover detail already discarded.
- Do my images get uploaded to a server?
- No. The Canvas API in your browser performs every conversion locally. Your images never leave your device.
- Which format should I use for web images?
- WebP is the best all-around choice: 25–35% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality with support in all modern browsers. Use AVIF for even smaller files in Chrome and Firefox. Use JPEG for maximum compatibility and PNG for transparency or lossless quality.
- Is AVIF supported everywhere?
- AVIF is supported in Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, and Safari 16+. For broadest compatibility choose WebP or JPEG. The browser you are using right now determines whether it can encode AVIF: if your browser does not support it the conversion will fall back or produce an error.
- Can I convert GIF or BMP files?
- Yes. The tool accepts GIF, BMP, JPEG, PNG and WebP as input. Note that GIF animation is not preserved: only the first frame is converted.
- How many files can I convert at once?
- There is no hard limit. The converter processes files sequentially in your browser. Very large batches may use significant memory: if you have hundreds of files, process them in groups.
- Will transparent areas be preserved when converting to PNG or WebP?
- Yes. PNG and WebP both support transparency (alpha channel). Converting a transparent PNG to WebP preserves the transparent areas. Conversion to JPEG replaces transparency with white because JPEG does not support alpha.
- Is the tool free?
- Yes, completely free with no account, no watermarks and no conversion limits.
- How do I convert a JPG to PNG without losing quality?
- Select PNG as the output format and add your JPEG file. PNG is a lossless format so the conversion will not introduce additional quality loss. Note that any quality already lost when the original JPEG was saved cannot be recovered: PNG preserves whatever the JPEG currently contains.
- What is the best image format for a website in 2025?
- WebP is the best general-purpose choice: it is 25-35% smaller than JPEG at equivalent visual quality and is supported by all modern browsers. Use AVIF for even smaller files in Chrome and Firefox. Keep JPEG for maximum compatibility with older systems and PNG when you need transparency or lossless quality.
