Free browser speech-to-text: private, no uploads, 10+ languages

The AlteredIdea Speech to Text tool uses the Web Speech API built into modern browsers to convert your voice to text in real time: no audio files are uploaded, no account is needed, and nothing is sent to any server. It supports 11 languages and uses continuous recognition mode so you can dictate long passages without interruption.

Because the speech processing happens in your browser using your operating system's recognition engine, accuracy is comparable to your device's built-in dictation feature. The transcript is fully editable before you copy or download it, and the word count and estimated speaking time update automatically as you speak.

Step-by-step guide

  1. 1
    Allow microphone access
When you click Start Recording, your browser will ask for microphone permission. Click Allow: the audio is processed locally by your browser and never sent to any server.
  2. 2
    Select your language
Choose from 11 languages in the language dropdown before you start recording. You can change the language between sessions.
  3. 3
    Start recording
Click the green Start Recording button. A pulsing red indicator shows that recording is active. Speak clearly into your microphone: live interim results appear in the preview area while you speak.
  4. 4
    Review the transcript
As you speak, final results are appended to the main transcript area. The transcript is fully editable: click inside it to correct any misrecognised words.
  5. 5
    Copy or download
Click Stop Recording when finished. Use the Copy button to copy the transcript to your clipboard, or Download .txt to save it as a file. The word count and estimated speaking time update automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this tool upload my audio to a server?
No. The Web Speech API built into your browser processes all audio locally on your device using your operating system's speech recognition engine. No audio data is sent to AlteredIdea's servers.
Which browsers support the Web Speech API?
The Web Speech API is supported in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and other Chromium-based browsers on desktop. Safari on macOS and iOS has partial support. Firefox does not currently support it. If your browser is not supported, the tool shows a clear message.
What languages are supported?
The tool supports 11 languages: English (US), English (UK), Spanish, French, German, Arabic, Hindi, Portuguese, Italian, Japanese, and Chinese (Simplified). The language is passed to the browser's speech recognition engine as a BCP-47 code.
What does 'continuous mode' mean?
The tool uses continuous mode, which means the microphone stays active and keeps transcribing until you click Stop Recording. This is useful for long dictation sessions or transcribing meetings and presentations.
What is estimated speaking time?
The estimated speaking time is calculated by dividing the word count by 130 words per minute: the average adult speaking rate. It gives a rough estimate of how long it would take to deliver the transcript as a speech.
Can I edit the transcript?
Yes. The transcript area is a fully editable textarea. Click inside it to correct any errors before copying or downloading.
